Chapter House

to be trained sick with doubt
put you across
to the, unpleasant, matter
of naming, and she became

bright by day by day eating
forgetting to pray, but to seek out hearts
was enough, became too clear

sky above troubled
ever so
evensong, lectures on the common law
broadcast for radio forget

them too, not being unkind
but die than be that ministry.

...

heavy rain from the west
hammered the window.

Clear sky, it means
are you managing to rest? Is the pain a little
quelled? I would have said

I will come to you soon
it is impossible

a very few streets over
it is my job to

help you through

the city is closed.

Writing Prompt #2

  1. At the Creative Writing degree a constant mantra is "show, don't tell". Nobody likes a grass. But showing is also a form of snitching. Tell me about it.

Writing Prompt #1

Over the next however long I will post a series of writing prompts. You will follow them.

On the Writing Course style is everything. In 2009 I went to the Edinburgh Fringe with a group of poets. One day we went to a poetry show. A well respected magazine having some kind of showcase or competition. One of the organisers said the magazine refused poems that involved "shards of glass" on the basis of cliché. I found myself surprised. I never knew it would be this simple. One must avoid cliché.

This is one of my experiences. Try having one of your own.
